Welcome to Autumn 2 in Blue Jays.

Read on to find out what's coming up.

You can find our knowledge organisers for this half-term at the bottom of the page.

English

In English, we will be exploring two texts: The Tear Thief by Carol Ann Duffy and The BFG by Roald Dahl.

While reading The Tear Thief by Carol Ann Duffy, children will be exploring figurative language like similes and metaphors. Furthermore, they will explore the use of different sentence types to share information and to give advice while exploring the health benefits of crying and how crying is the body’s way of dealing with intense emotions or overwhelming situations.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we continue with our addition and subtraction unit, before we move onto multiplication and division.

Children should be fluent in their place value in order to recognise what two numbers make up another when adding or taking away when moving from pictorial support such as number lines to abstract methods such as column addition and subtraction.

Children should already be confident in their 2's, 5's and 10's times tables. In year 3, we progress to the 3's, 4's and 8's times tables. using concrete and pictorial arrays before progressing to numerals.

Science

In science, we will be exploring the life cycles in nature, from plants to animals, specifically the roles that parts of flowers play in pollination and seed dispersal. Children will be able to explain that most cycles start with a seed and grow from there.

Geography

In geography, we will be looking at what different settlements require to qualify as hamlets, villages, towns and cities. Children will be able to talk about what makes an area rural or urban using key vocabulary.

History

In history, we will be exploring Ancient Egypt and the way that its developments affected our lives today. We will explore  archaeologist Howard Carters' discovery of Tutunkhamun's tomb and how what was found there tells us about life in Ancient Egypt.

Religious Education

In Religious Education, children will be investigating the question: Has Christmas lost its true meaning? Children will use key vocabulary to explain the actions of key characters from the nativity and what consequences those actions had.

Physical Education

In physical education, year 3 will be donning their dancing shoes and completing a series of dancing lessons and learning more about ball skills, including dribbling, tracking, passing and catching.

French

In French, children will be learning key phrases in French to do with items that can be found in the classroom.

Music

In music, the staff look forward to sharing disco, New Orleans jazz and sea shanties while we answer the social question: What stories does music tell us about the past?
