Welcome to Summer Term One!

Whilst it is a relatively short half-term, Finches will be busy with the following lessons:

Reading:

Our class text this half-term will be ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo.

English:

English is focussed on the book ‘Beowulf’ by Michael Morpurgo.  We will be immersing ourselves back in Anglo-Saxon times and getting a feel for monsters, warriors and heroes before writing our own magical and mysterious legends that can be passed on through history!

Maths:

In Maths, we are moving over to Geometry; we will be looking first at shape this half-term and learning all about angles, not only precisely measuring them but using our knowledge to be able to estimate them even better than before and then looking at the angles of 2D shapes before focussing on the vertices and faces of 3D shapes.  After that, we will be moving on to position and direction.

Science:

In Science, we will be learning about astronomy, expanding our knowledge and understanding of gravity and the part that it has to play in the universe; our galaxy, the Milky Way, our nearest neighbouring galaxy Andromeda and the Big Bang Theory, as well as the Moon and its phases and the planets in our solar system.

Music:

We are studying our ‘Freedom to improvise’ this half-term and kick off with learning a song called “Into the Night”.  I think the class will like it as it’s very upbeat and has a ‘disco’ vibe!

Art:

Art is all about different styles of art, comparing different pieces of artwork, from Van Gogh’s ‘Quinces’, Munch’s ‘The Scream’ and Stubbs ‘Whistlejacket’ to learning about Rococo style and, finally, comparing abstract art.

French:

In French, we will be focussing on the verbs in a French week.

Geography: We are getting to know the United Kingdom better this half-term, starting with East Anglia and then moving on to the Midlands and Derbyshire, comparing and contrasting not only the topography, but also the weather conditions as well.

History:

We remain in the United Kingdom for this half-term: we will be learning about the Industrial Revolution; the importance of it and the consequences that it has on us today.

RE:

In RE, we will be look at the beliefs for consequences (Karma), Samsara and Moksha and how they help Hindus to lead a good life.

PE:

We know we are in summer term when we get the rounder’s bats out!  Rounders will be on a Tuesday morning and on Friday afternoons we shall be concentrating on Athletics.

Computing:

We are learning about flat file databases.

Life Skills:

We will be discussing what ‘family’ means to us and all the different family groups that we belong to as well as our two SRE lessons before returning to look at how a feature of positive family life is caring relationships filled with respect.
