Welcome to Summer 1 in Robins. This is going to be a short, jam-packed with learning, half-term! We will be completing our Year 2 SATs in May, as well as looking forward to lots of other learning besides.

Behaviours for Learning

Our theme will be Good to be me, exploring children's feelings, developing self-awareness, and helping us to realise that it really is good to be me! This theme is about understanding our feelings as well as considering our strengths and weaknesses as learners. We will develop knowledge, understanding, and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy.

English

Our text will be Tadpole's Promise by Jeane Willis and Tony Ross.

We  will write our own promises on lily pads to float in our class pond and record a simple explanation of a process of change they are familiar with. We will go on to re-enact sections of the story and consider the thoughts of the characters at certain points. This is in preparation for us to plan and write our own version of the narrative using characters of our choice (who also meet a grizzly ending!). Using information from the text we will also create an explanation text in leaflet form to outline the stages in the lifecycle of a frog.

Maths

We will learn to recognise and find unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) of shapes, quantities, and lengths. We will also learn to understand and use the terms "unit fraction" and "non-unit fraction," and begin to explore equivalent fractions like 2/4 being equal to 1/2.

Science

In science, we will be looking at plants and how they grow. We will be focussing on the journey of a potato from tubae to our plate, and having a go at growing cress. The differences between seeds and bulbs will be explored, as will what a plant needs to thrive.

Geography

Northern Europe is our destination for Geography this half-term. We shall be focussing on Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. We will also be looking in detail at the Sami People - indigenous to Northern Europe.

Religious Education

Does praying at regular intervals help a Muslim in his/her everyday life? We will focus on the importance of prayer (Salah) as a core practice in Islam, connecting it to the Five Pillars of Islam, emphasising the positive impact of daily prayer on a Muslim's life. We will explore the five daily prayers and why they are a vital part of Muslim life.

Life Skills

What makes a good relationship? (including RSE). We will learn about parts of the body, using the medical, or doctors' names. We will also explore relationships, in terms of friendships and family, including examining the stereotypes of boys and girls and learning about consent in an age-appropriate way.

Computing

We will learn to represent data visually using pictures or symbols. We will begin by understanding what data is and how to collect it using tally charts, then progress to creating and interpreting pictograms and block diagrams. We will use technology to collect, organise and present data.

Music

Exploring Improvisation is the theme of our musical learning. We will be exploring sounds, keeping the beat, and carefully listening to music so we can discuss the elements heard. We will be listening to a variety of pieces, and then using the tuned and untuned instruments to improvise.

Art

We will explore how artists use symmetry and landscape elements in their work. We will learn about famous artists like William Turner, Constable, Rousseaux and Andrew Goldsworthy.

We will develop our understanding of:

  • Landscape Art: Recognizing features like trees, hills, and buildings in paintings.

  • Symmetry in Art: Identifying symmetrical patterns and compositions.

  • Art Techniques: Experimenting with different materials to create their own symmetrical landscapes.
